Irate Privileged Boy

Some white people (or Caucasian, if you'd like) have started trying to defend and/or bring minorities up to the elevated level of white people in society. White people have always been automatically placed into that level when they're born on this spinning ball in the middle of space. They're born with that spoon in their mouth whether they like it or not (ex. Macon's case).

White people finally began realizing how most other races in the world are held at a lower level than in society than white people, which is a great thing and will hopefully facilitate needed changes in the way society works. Ultimately, it'll take all parties involved to truly fix this problem of underlying racism in society, so it's fantastic that white people are finally coming around and realizing how putting themselves on top ends up degrading everybody else in ways.

The newer generations have generally been raised with the idea of equality for everyone and how people shouldn't be treated differently because of the color of their skin. But while we're beginning to promote equality in the world, it's going to take more than just a few decades to actually change things. I mean, think about it: Our entire society was built off of racist ideas and actions, whether that be slave labor, Jim Crow laws, or just plain old racism. Slavery was only abolished 154 years ago, which isn't that long ago if you look at the larger scheme of things. You won't be able to get rid of racism and all the negative ideas associated with it that quickly.

What kind of irks me (and probably some of us) about Macon and other white people when they try to take on Black culture is that they kind of do so for the heck of it or because it's cool. He can't really change the fact that he's a white suburban boy and will be treated differently (and better) than minorities in most situations he'll encounter in the world. He can cross the line and adapt a minority's culture and jump back over to the "white person" side of the line as he pleases. Whether he likes it or not, that is a privilege he has that actual minorities don't possess.

  1. Good post! I appreciated you relating Macon to our real life situation. As you started getting at, it irks me that Macon is taking on Black culture for the attention and how much he is simply taking over the entire cause. It should be about lifting up black people, not putting a white person in charge of black people (my personal take).

  2. I agree with the basic core of your post. It's very interesting and analytical. However, can we really blame Macon for his privilege? He's super self-aware, and at least it feels to me like he's trying to use his privilege in a productive manner, not just retreating into the safety of whiteness. I don't know, something to think about I guess.
